Message Camshaft profiles actually have something designed in them called overlap. During this time both intake and exhaust valves are open somewhat. If the exhaust valves are sticking shut or not fully opening or if the intake valves shut early it can actually raise compression especially at cranking speed. Because the overlap duration is decreased and this forces up pressure. Overlap only helps airflow at higher engine speeds. I have seen it happen more than once.
